Woman falls from procedure table, sues doctor, hospital

When we are hospitalized, we expect to be cared for properly. This is especially true when we receive a sedative or are "put under." Unfortunately, medical negligence is common in North Carolina and the rest of the country, which makes trusting hospitals hard to do sometimes.

Recently, a woman brought a medical malpractice lawsuit against her doctor and hospital after she allegedly fell off a procedure table during a treatment for back pain and suffered injuries. When we go to the hospital in North Carolina or elsewhere, we expect that our condition will be made better, not worse. Sadly, this is not the case for the thousands of people who fall victim to medical malpractice each year.

Surgical errors are just one type of medical malpractice that is more common than it should be. Wrong-site surgeries, in particular, seem like they would be very rare, but actually occur with some regularity.

In fact, the North Carolina Department of Labor recently announced that workplace fatalities in the state went up last year. It was reported that there were 53 workplace fatalities in 2011, which was up from 50 the year before.

When a motor vehicle hits someone who is traveling on foot, whether it be a walker, jogger or runner, catastrophic injuries are often the result. It is common for pedestrians to suffer head injuries, as well as neck and back injuries. Fatalities are also all too common.

According to USA Today, pedestrian accidents are on the rise in North Carolina and elsewhere because of iPods and other devices that make it harder for people on foot to sense an oncoming motor vehicle until it is too late.
